(New!) BC Opioid Crisis: Response, Safety, and Resources
This workshop provides information about the ongoing BC Opioid Emergency, including what opioids are, overdose causes, and how to identify an overdose. Additionally, it discusses how to respond to an overdose, some strategies to remain safe when using, and community resources.
Elder Abuse: What Is It? How Do We Deal With It?
Previously known as “Building Community Connections to Help Stop Mistreatment and Neglect of Older Adults”, this 90-minute workshop addresses the correlation between social isolation and abuse of older adults, types of abuse and people involved, and strategies to deal with abuse. We discuss the importance of staying connected to others through brainstorming community resources, and viewing a short video depicting a fictional story of social isolation and elder abuse.
Powers of Attorney, Joint Bank Accounts and Representation Agreements
This 60 to 90-minute workshop provides older adults with information to protect their finances, to recognize and respond to financial abuse, and to access resources for further assistance. We focus on the importance of advance planning, forms of financial abuse through joint bank accounts and powers of attorney, and strategies to deal with financial abuse.
Frauds and Scams
This workshop introduces common scams targeting Canadian seniors. This workshop will introduce what frauds and scams are, common types that are occurring, safety strategies, and resources to consult if someone you know has been affected by a scam.
Residential Tenancy for Older Adults Workshop
This 60-minute workshop covers information on Residential Tenancy Law in British Columbia; including the rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants, and the process involved in dispute resolution with the Residential Tenancy Branch.
Government Benefits for Older Adults
This 90-minute workshop provides an informative overview to numerous federal and provincial government benefits for seniors – including Old Age Security (OAS), Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), Canada Pension Plan (CPP), Fair Pharmacare, BC Senior Supplement, Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER).
Seniors First BC Program Introduction
This presentation introduces Seniors First BC’s programs and services. Additionally, it will provide an overview of common issues that are facing older adults with examples of situations where Seniors First BC could assist in preventing abuse and mistreatment.
