You and your staff should be sensitive to the impacts of ageism – see our page Ageism and an Age Friendly Legal Services and Workplace.

Consider sitting down with your staff and having them complete and discuss the ROPE tool.

When assisting older adults who may be abused, neglected or are self-neglecting, it is important to be able to identify and respond to indicators of abuse and neglect.  See the Seniors First BC guide for service providers:

When older adults may be abused or neglected and are unable to seek help themselves, review the Decision Tree and accompanying videos developed by the Public Guardian and Trustee:


Decision TreeFor adults who may be vulnerable or incapable, see the two-page “Decision Tree: Assisting an Adult Who is Abused, Neglected or Self Neglecting” prepared by the Public Guardian and Trustee of BC.

The Decision Tree outlines which agencies to contact to make the most effective referrals.

The Decision Tree is accompanied by a series of five videos that together set the legislative context including:

  • the guiding principles of providing the least intrusive, most effective forms of support;
  • illustrate how to use the decision tree; and
  • provide scenarios showing when it may be appropriate to contact the police, a designated agency or the PGT.
