Established in 1994, Seniors First BC Society (SFBC) is a charitable, non-profit society that provides information, legal advocacy, and support to older adults across BC who are dealing with issues affecting their well-being. SFBC provides free help to older adults through 6 programs: the Seniors Abuse Information Line (SAIL), Victim Services Program, Public Education and Outreach Program (PEO), and three legal programs.

The PEO Presenter will help raise awareness on elder abuse prevention and response including neglect and self-neglect prevention, recognition and response, frauds and scams and other topics of relevance to seniors’ wellbeing.

Rate of Pay: $29 per hour, dependent on hours worked, skills, and experience.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Participate in community activities and events.

• Plan and develop content for educational materials.

• Schedule and coordinate sessions with community partners.

• Deliver presentations, online and in person.

• Collect feedback from audience and evaluate.

• Maintain records (number of events, number of participants, key stakeholders) to support reports to funders, the board of directors, and for new grant proposals

• Along with the Executive Director and PEO Team, revise slides/materials.

• Develop and delivers Public Legal Education presentations in person and remotely.

Required  

• Excellent spoken and written communication skills

• Public-speaking experience

• Experience building and nurturing partnerships with community agencies and government

• Experience working with marginalized groups

• Driver’s license

• Ability to present occasionally on weekends/evenings

• Willingness to travel.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic articled student to join the legal team in June 2026. We are seeking an individual deeply committed to the rights and needs of all seniors, elders and older adults. Thanks to funding from the Law Foundation of BC, this position is for one year as an articled student, who can potentially be hired back as a lawyer for another year.

Job description

Under the supervision of the Executive Director and the Senior Legal Counsel, the Articling Student will work in providing legal advice, support and services to SFBC’s Elder Law Clinic (ELC), Legal Advocacy Program (LAP) and Advance Planning Clinic (APC) in the areas of wills and estates, civil litigation, housing, healthcare and other areas of law impacting seniors in BC.  This may include:

• Assessment of files referred to the ELC, identifying legal issues, conducting research, and preparing relevant briefing notes or summaries for follow up.
• Performing legal research on systemic and procedural issues, and drafting legal pleadings, letters and written submissions under the instruction or supervision of the legal team.
• Attending hearings, before administrative tribunals such as the Residential Tenancy Branch, or in Court.
• Preparing advance planning documents, including wills, powers of attorney and representation agreements, including for Elders living on reserve.

Qualifications

• Legal clinic (e.g. LSLAP), non-profit community involvement, and advocacy and/or volunteering experience at the service of vulnerable populations is an asset, but not required.

Skills and abilities

• High level of patience and integrity
• Excellent communication skills, and ability to converse with older adults in a courteous and compassionate manner, both on the phone and in person
• Multiple language skills an asset
• Ability to work as a member of a team, while also able to be self-directed, and follow instructions and work with minimal supervision
• Proficiency with Microsoft programs including Teams
• Detail-oriented and organized, and able to multi-task and set priorities
• capacity for discretion and confidentiality
