Available Positions

Job Type: Casual/Relief – this position receives and responds to request for relief coverage on SAIL.

Days and Hours of Work:
• Be available for a minimum of 2 shifts per month during the operational hours of SAIL, which are scheduled between Mondays and Fridays at the following times:
- 8:00am to 3:30pm;
- 9:00am to 4:30pm;
- 10:00am to 5:30pm; and
- 12:30pm to 8:00pm

Wage rate: $25.50 per hour
Location: Remote or from our downtown Vancouver office.

Overview:
Established in 1994, Seniors First BC Society (SFBC) is a charitable, non-profit society that provides information, legal advocacy, and support to older adults across BC who are dealing with issues affecting their well-being. SFBC provides free help to older adults through 6 programs: Seniors Abuse and Information Line (SAIL), Victim Services Program, Education and Outreach Program, Elder Law Clinic, Legal Advocacy Program, and Advance Planning Clinic.
The Seniors Abuse and Information Line (SAIL) is a provincial helpline that provides a safe place for older adults, and those who care about them, to talk to someone about situations where they feel they are being abused or mistreated, or to receive information about elder awareness prevention. At the time of posting, SAIL operates 5 days a week (except statutory holidays) between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
• Answer SAIL during operational hours and assess callers’ needs; provide callers with information and assistance on elder abuse identification, response and prevention; and refers callers to the legal and victim service programs of Seniors First BC and to external resources;
• Provide callers with emotional and practical support to assist them with the impacts of elder abuse, neglect and self-neglect;
• Assess needs of callers to determine appropriate referrals, assisted referrals and/or need for additional supports and services;
• Document and maintain appropriate records and information for all calls received at SAIL and complete intake to the legal and victim services programs, as appropriate;
• Maintain positive working relationships with external agencies to facilitate coordination, minimize service duplication, and maximize effective referrals across agencies;
• Attend SAIL and staff meetings as required; and
• Carry out other tasks as assigned by the SAIL Team Lead, Manager of SAIL and Victim Services Programs, and/or Seniors First BC Executive Director.

Qualifications and Competencies:
• A Bachelor’s Degree in Social Services, Gerontology, or equivalent experience.
• Must have minimum 2 years of paid or volunteer experience on a telephone helpline for older adults or vulnerable populations.
• Fluency in English language, verbally and in writing. Knowledge of a second language is an advantage.
• Excellent skills in call handling, interviewing and assessing callers’ needs over the phone.
• Empathy and confidence in supporting older adults, including the ability to remain calm under pressure and demonstrate diplomacy and tact.
• Understanding of trauma-informed approach and working with marginalized communities.
• Cultural competency and ability to work with older adults from various cultural communities.
• Skilled in navigating complex situations and providing information, support and referrals on issues involving abuse, neglect and self-neglect and other issues that impact older adults.
• Knowledge of issues affecting older adults, particularly abuse, neglect and self-neglect, including legislation, resources and services for seniors, is preferred.
• Competency working in Microsoft Office programs. Experience with data entry an asset.
• A Criminal Record Check (in Vulnerability Sector) is required.

We offer free services through the Seniors Abuse and Information Line (SAIL), Legal Programs, Victim Services, and our Public Education and Outreach (PEO) Program. We are currently seeking a part-time Program Manager to support our Public Education & Outreach Program. 

Job Title: Public Education & Outreach Program Manager
Reports to: Executive Director 

Main Purpose of the Position:
The Public Education and Outreach (PEO) Program raises awareness of issues affecting older adults in British Columbia by developing educational materials and delivering presentations to the public and other organizations. These presentations may be conducted in-person, virtually, or in hybrid formats. The PEO Program also supports the organization’s communications and fundraising efforts. The Program Manager will oversee and contribute to PEO activities, including administration, communications, outreach, and public education events. This role also involves supporting other organization staff and volunteers in carrying out program activities. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Operations (in consultation with ED and with support from operational team). 

  • Manage program materials and equipment 
  • Maintain program files and tracking spreadsheets (events, members, etc.) 
  • Review and approve program timesheets 
  • Assist in developing program budgets 
  • Submit receipts and invoices for program activities 
  • Support grant applications and reporting processes 
  • SUBMIT REPORTS 

Communications and Outreach 

  • Contribute to the editing and publication of communications materials, including newsletters and social media content 
  • Participate in newsletter planning with other program managers and the Executive Director 
  • Respond to public inquiries related to the organization’s public education and outreach activities 

Education and Community Engagement (in coordination with the Learning Events & Outreach Coordinator) 

  • Coordinate and deliver learning events 
  • Attend meetings with community partners and networks 
  • Attend community outreach events as needed 
  • Support program evaluation, including collecting feedback from attendees 
  • Recruit volunteers 
  • Train volunteers and prepare training materials 
  • Coordinate volunteer participation in events and presentations 

Qualifications: 

  • 2–3 years of experience in community outreach in a nonprofit setting. 
  • Demonstrated program management and organizational skills, including project management, evaluation, budgeting, fundraising, grant writing, and general administration. 
  • Relevant educational background (e.g., Gerontology, Social Work, Program Management, Nonprofit Administration). 
  • Sensitivity, empathy, and the ability to work with a diverse range of people in a friendly, compassionate, and trauma-informed manner. 
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills, with the ability to research and present on new topics. 
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with a focus on plain language communication. 
  • Knowledge and experience in developing and delivering education materials to diverse audiences. 
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and possesses ability to learn and use new digital tools. 
  • Experience with publishing tools and social media platforms is an asset (e.g., MailChimp, Canva, WordPress). 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate in a team environment. 
  • Awareness of systemic issues affecting diverse older adult populations in BC. 
  • Language skills other than English are an asset. 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment. 
  • Experience working with and leading staff and volunteers. 
  • Understanding of privacy and confidentiality practices, especially in nonprofit or health-related settings. 

Work Location:
Hybrid; the program manager will primarily work remotely from home with routine in-person attendance at events and the Downtown Vancouver office to manage materials and equipment. 

Hours and Salary:
Part-time: 21–28 hours per week
Compensation: $31-33/hour based on experience

Administrator Job description 

Seniors First BC is a non-profit organization that provides assistance to seniors in British Columbia through five programs: Seniors Abuse Information Line, Victim Services, the Education and Outreach program and three legal programs (Elder Law Clinic, Legal Advocacy Program, Advance Planning Clinic). 

The Administrator will maintain and improve solid and efficient organizational systems to support the organization’s 30+ staff to ensure the delivery of services to vulnerable adults throughout BC. Working in partnership with the Executive Director and program managers, the Operations Manager assists with administrative and financial management of the organization. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

Office/Building Management 

  • Coordinate staff’s access to physical facilities (keys, fob, etc.) 
  • Directs and implements systems to ensure the SFBC office functions efficiently and safely for all staff, clients and volunteers; 
  • Liaise with building operators for office issues. 
  • Coordinate repairs and improvements with building manger and contractors. 
  • Reorganize office layout based on staff’s needs. 

IT and equipment management 

  • Manage, purchase (and occasionally ships) office equipment (printers, phones, desks, chairs etc.). 
  • Ship equipment to staff as needed (which requires physical trips to the post office). 
  • Maintain computer inventory and track staff assignments. 
  • Provides first-level troubleshooting for IT issues and escalates to IT and telephony consultants as needed. 
  • Coordinates software upgrades. 

Human resources 

  • Onboard new staff: HR procedures, use of payroll and absence management system. 
  • Schedules staff meetings. 
  • Add staff to the benefit program and answers enquiries regarding benefits and mental health supports. 
  • Update administrative policies and procedures manual in collaboration with the ED and program managers. 

Staff meetings and committees 

  • Assist with the preparation of staff meetings 
  • Participate in Occupational Health and Safety committee. 
  • Participate in minute taking. 

Board and members’ meetings 

  • Sends doodle polls and schedule bi-monthly Board meetings and committees’ meetings. 
  • Gathers reports from program managers and helps prepare board reports. 
  • Maintain the membership list. 
  • Assist with the preparation of the annual general meeting. 

Donor management, in consultation with fundraiser, PEO team and ED 

  • Assist with donor management: help track donors. 
  • Engage with donors: call donors, draft correspondence for current and prospective donors, etc. 

Bookkeeping (when temporary coverage is needed) 

  • Processes invoices. 
  • Collects and enters reimbursement forms from staff. 

Qualifications and Competencies 

  • 2+ years in a similar role in a nonprofit organization. 
  • Skills in administration, IT, internal communications, HR and/or financial management; 
  • Must be comfortable with technology (Zoom, MS Teams, Doodle Polls, etc.) and working in a paperless office. 
  • Familiarity with Payworks or another payroll software an asset. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral. 
  • Demonstrated ability to function well in a team environment and knowledge of leading practices in developing and maintaining a strong team culture. 
  • Satisfactory criminal record check for the vulnerable sector needed to secure the position. 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills. 
  • Positive, energetic and pleasant attitude. 

 

Compensation: $45,000-60,000/year, based on experience, plus extended health benefits after probation.

Job Title: Legal Advocate 

Start Date: July 2025 

Salary: $58,000-61,000/year, depending on hours worked, skills and experience. 

Competitive extended health benefits after probation. 

Hours: Full-time, 35 hours per week 

Reports to: Supervising Lawyer/Executive Director  

 

Job Summary 

The Legal Advocate will provide legal information, summary advice and representation to older adults who have limited financial resources. Client files are mainly residential tenancy issues. The Legal Advocate works with SFBC to advance legal education and community outreach activities. 

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Conduct client interviews on the telephone and/or in person, and assess and analyze legal problems 
  • Provide legal advice on housing issues under the supervision of SFBC’s staff lawyer 
  • Draft legal submissions and correspondence on behalf of clients 
  • Negotiates settlements (when appropriate) 
  • Represent clients in hearings before the Residential Tenancy Branch 
  • Works collaboratively with all our other programs. 

Develop and conduct Public Legal Education workshops and presentations in the Lower Mainland

Qualifications: 

  • Post-secondary education in law or social sciences, or other related field 
  • Excellent advocacy and problem solving skills 
  • Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written 
  • Understanding of trauma-informed approach and working with marginalized communities 
  • Cultural competency and ability to work with older adults from various cultural communities 
  • Understanding of the Residential Tenancy Act. 
  • Prior experience working as a legal advocate in the non-profit sector is an asset 
  • The ability speak languages other than English is an asset 

 

Additional Information 

The successful applicant will be expected to work during their training out of our downtown office then at least one day/week in the office, with the option to work remotely on remaining days.
