Happy 50th Anniversary at the BC Bar, Gordon!

Today, May 20, 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of J. Gordon Marshall as a barrister and solicitor in British Columbia.

With previous extensive experience in criminal and civil litigation, Gordon started serving clients for Seniors First BC, previously known as the BC Center for Elder Advocacy and Support (the “Society”) in 2007.

Gordon soon transformed the Society’s Elder Law Clinic from a program offering information, summary advice and rare representation to one delivering a wide spectrum of services closer to those offered at a law firm. He established consultation clinics throughout the Lower Mainland as well a Trial Preparation Clinic for self-represented litigations appearing in Provincial or Supreme Court. The Elder Law Clinic has assisted clients in litigation proceeding ranging from obtaining an order for delivery of cremated remains to a step-child, obtaining and vacating committee orders (Patients Property Acts of British Columbia and Alberta), addressing financial abuse by attorneys, family members and unscrupulous salespersons, to assisting in the Provincial Court of British Columbia in enforcing judgments and seeking findings of contempt.

Since Gordon joined the Society, the number of clients helped by the Elder Law Clinic has increased by over five hundred percent, from 996 between 2009 and 2015, to 6,521 between 2016 and 2022. In 2024-2025, he assisted nearly 2,000 clients.

Largely attributable to Gordon’s stable presence and unsurpassed ability to handle ever-growing file volumes, the Society has been able to expand access to justice to older adults in all parts of the province, including to First Nations. Clients served by Gordon commonly comment on his effectiveness at resolving complex issues and his gentlemanly manner.

More generally, present and past colleagues of the private Bar and of the Society routinely describe Gordon as an outstanding mentor whose incisive remarks and encouragements stay with them throughout their careers. Always mindful of treating the reputation of the legal profession as a sacred trust, Gordon exemplifies the qualities that all lawyers ought to possess: competence, integrity, deference to the Courts, dedication to clients regardless of their means, and courtesy, including to opposing counsel.

We are immensely fortunate to have Gordon at Seniors First BC.

Happy Anniversary, Gordon!
