Taking place every year on June 15th, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) recognizes elder abuse as a significant public health and human rights issue for older adults across the globe.
At Seniors First BC, we are doing our part in supporting and assisting older adults across the province who are experiencing or at risk of abuse or neglect, as well as concerned family and friends. We welcome others to join us in pursuing our vision of a British Columbia where older adults can live with dignity, free from abuse of any kind.
Our Seniors Abuse & Information Line experienced a persistent rise in calls regarding abuse year after year. In the past fiscal year (April 2022-March 2023), our intake workers received a total of 6,501 calls, of which 2,914 were about elder abuse.
Alongside our valued community partners across British Columbia, we will continue to work towards increasing awareness about elder abuse and assistive resources, expanding the availability of our services to older adults and communities across the province, and addressing barriers older adults may encounter in accessing the support or legal justice that they need.
We thank the Law Foundation of BC, the Province of BC, Vancouver City Savings Credit Union (Vancity), and the City of Vancouver for their generous support.
Seniors First BC is a charitable, non-profit society that provides information, advocacy, and support to seniors across BC who are dealing with issues affecting their well-being.
