WHO WE ARE

About

Formerly the BC Centre for Elder Advocacy and Support, Seniors First BC is a charitable, non-profit society that provides information, advocacy, support and referrals to older adults across BC who are dealing with issues affecting their well-being or rights. In addition, we assist those concerned about the welfare of older adults.

We are committed to:

  • Protecting the legal rights of older adults;
  • Increasing access to justice for older adults;
  • Informing the public about elder abuse and;
  • Providing supportive programs for older adults who have been abused.

The people behind the organization:

Our membership is comprised of agencies and individuals. We have more than 100 members throughout British Columbia. Additionally, we are governed by a board of directors and day-to-day operations are carried out by capable staff and volunteers. We rely on community members and experts to keep us informed about community needs and to advise us on how to keep our services as accessible as possible.

Seniors First BC is the only non-profit organization in Western Canada offering a combination of psycho-social and justice-based support to older adults. We have staff from a variety of professional fields, which enables us to take a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to support older adults and those who care about them through our programs:

Land Acknowledgement

At Seniors First BC, we recognize and witness daily the consequences of Canada’s colonial history on Indigenous Elders, their families, and their communities that we serve across the province. We believe that the acknowledgement of the land on which we are fortunate and grateful to work and live is an important step towards reconciliation and the dismantling of colonial structures that have displaced Indigenous peoples from their cultural practices, traditional leadership, ancestral territories, communities, and families.

As a provincial organization, we acknowledge the traditional territories of all the First Nations of British Columbia, on whose land we operate, and we recognize each for their unique culture, history, and traditions. We thank the people and elders who have stewarded these lands and waters since time immemorial.

We also acknowledge that Seniors First BC’s office in downtown Vancouver is located on the unceded and ancestral territory of the Coast Salish Peoples – the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. The term unceded means that the land was never legally ceded, or given up to the Crown, by the Coast Salish Peoples through a treaty or other agreement, and thus, they have never left, and will always retain their jurisdiction and relationships with their territories.
